Most people only think about an eye test when their vision gets noticeably worse — but by then, significant changes may have already occurred. Here is a practical guide to how often you should be testing your eyes.

General Guidelines by Age

Children (Under 18)

Children's eyes change rapidly during school years. Annual eye tests are recommended. Myopia in particular is progressing faster in Indian children due to increased screen time and reduced outdoor play.

  • Under 5: At least every 2 years (or sooner if any signs of problems)
  • School age (5–18): Every year

Adults (18–40)

For adults with no existing eye conditions and no prescription, every 2 years is generally sufficient. However, if you use a prescription — glasses or contact lenses — test annually to catch changes before they affect your daily life.

Adults Over 40

After 40, the risk of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts increases significantly. Annual eye tests are recommended from age 40 onwards — even if your vision seems fine. These conditions often have no early symptoms.

Seniors (Over 60)

Annual eye tests without exception. The risk of sight-threatening conditions increases with each passing year. Early detection is the only way to preserve vision.

When to Book an Appointment Immediately

Do not wait for your next scheduled test if you experience:

  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Floaters or flashes of light appearing suddenly
  • Distorted central vision (straight lines appearing wavy)
  • Eye pain that does not resolve
  • Double vision
  • A curtain or shadow descending over your vision
These could be signs of a retinal detachment or other urgent eye emergency. Seek care within hours, not days.

Contact Lens Wearers

If you wear contact lenses, you should have an annual eye test and a separate annual contact lens check. Your optometrist will assess the health of your cornea, check the fit of your lenses, and update your prescription if needed.

Diabetics and High-Risk Groups

If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of glaucoma, or have had eye surgery — you may need more frequent tests, as advised by your doctor or optometrist.
