Contact lenses give you clear vision without the frames — but they come with real responsibility. Improper care is one of the leading causes of serious eye infections. Our certified optometrists at Spectica share the complete guide to keeping your eyes safe.

The Golden Rule: Clean Hands First

Before touching your contact lenses — whether inserting or removing — always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Dry them with a lint-free towel. This single habit prevents the majority of contact lens-related infections.

The Do's of Contact Lens Care

✓ Follow the Prescribed Replacement Schedule

Daily disposables are meant to be thrown away after one use — no exceptions. Monthly lenses must be replaced at 30 days, even if they look and feel fine. Protein deposits and bacteria accumulate over time, even when invisible.

✓ Clean Lenses Properly Every Time

When removing lenses, rub them gently with fresh solution — even if your solution says "no-rub." Research consistently shows that rubbing removes more deposits than soaking alone. Then rinse with fresh solution and store in a clean case.

✓ Replace Your Lens Case Regularly

Your lens case should be replaced every 1–3 months. After each use, rinse the case with fresh solution (never tap water), wipe with a clean tissue, and leave it face-down to air dry.

✓ Visit Your Optometrist Annually

Even if your vision feels unchanged, annual eye exams are essential for contact lens wearers. Your prescription may shift, and your optometrist checks the health of your corneas under the lenses.

✓ Use the Correct Solution

Use the solution recommended by your optometrist for your specific lens type. Not all solutions work with all lens materials. When in doubt, ask — at Spectica, we're always happy to advise.

The Don'ts of Contact Lens Care

✗ Never Sleep in Your Lenses

Unless you have lenses specifically designed for extended wear (and your optometrist has approved it), remove your contacts before sleeping. Sleeping in lenses dramatically increases the risk of corneal infection — by up to 8 times according to research.

✗ Never Use Tap Water

Tap water contains microorganisms including Acanthamoeba — a rare but devastating corneal parasite. Never rinse your lenses, case, or hands with tap water when handling contacts. This includes showering with lenses in.

✗ Never Top Up Solution in the Case

Always empty, rinse, and refill your lens case with fresh solution. "Topping up" old solution with new reduces disinfection efficacy significantly.

✗ Never Wear Lenses When Experiencing Symptoms

If your eyes are red, irritated, watering, or your vision is blurry — remove your lenses immediately. Wearing them through discomfort can turn a minor irritation into a serious infection. See an optometrist if symptoms persist.

✗ Never Wear Lenses Past the Expiry Date

Unopened contact lenses have an expiry date printed on the packaging. Past this date, the sterility of the solution cannot be guaranteed. Discard expired lenses.

Warning Signs That Demand Immediate Attention

  • Sudden sensitivity to light
  • Unusual discharge or crusting
  • Blurred vision that doesn't clear with blinking
  • Persistent redness or pain
  • Feeling of something in the eye that won't resolve

If you experience any of these, remove your lenses immediately and contact an eye care professional. Don't wait.

"Contact lenses are medical devices. Treat them with the same care and respect."
